Hajj and Eid ul Adha 2020 During Coronavirus – Covid-19

Any Muslim who knows his religion will be aware that Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. Muslims must perform it once in a lifetime – but with conditions attached. Eid-ul-Adha, meanwhile, is one of the two main Islamic festivals. Both Eids are a great moment of celebration for Muslims across the world.

First of all, it’s important to mention the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. With around 15 million people around the world having contracted the virus and more than half a million deaths, it is definitely not something to take likely. Allah tells us to be sensible in Islam. Currently, governments all across the world are trying to persuade people to take precautions. As Muslims, we must ensure that we abide by all rules and regulations.

Concerning Hajj and Eid, it is obvious that both occasions will not quite be the same in 2020 as they were in past years. Hajj will be limited to a small number of people in comparison to the usual number in the millions. Eid-ul-Adha in many countries will be a relatively quieter affair due to lockdowns and restrictions in place.

What is Hajj?

Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Makkah undertaken by Muslims. However, the condition is that a Muslim must be financially and physically capable of performing the pilgrimage importance of Hajj. During the pilgrimage, Muslims go to Makkah and nearby areas with the Hajj being focused on the Kaabah. Several different rituals make up the whole Hajj.

The Kaabah is the House of Allah and was constructed by Ibrahim (a.s.). Muslims also face the Kaabah every day during prayers. The five daily prayers are all to be performed while facing the Kaabah.

To perform an acceptable Hajj, a Muslim must ensure that all the money that funds the Hajj is completely halal. The believer must perfectly perform the Hajj, following the known Islamic method of doing so. The intention of the Hajj must be to please Allah, and Muslims must try to avoid all forms of sin and bad deeds. When a Muslim performs the pilgrimage properly, then he returns home like a baby without any sin.

Hajj 2020 during the pandemic

After much deliberation, the Saudi Arabia government decided that it is not feasible to host the Hajj in its entirety. Instead of millions of Muslims from all over the world performing Hajj, this year will see only a few thousand people among those residing in Saudi Arabi coming for the pilgrimage.

Muslims who missed out on Hajj this year must not get disheartened. They should be hopeful of being able to perform the pilgrimage in the future, insha’Allah. For the Muslims who do get to perform it this year, they must be thankful to Allah and follow all the standard operating procedures as directed by the government.

Why Muslims must learn the Quran

If you find that your knowledge of Islam and the Quran is inadequate, there is only one solution, which is to learn more about the Quran. The Quran is the most important book for Muslims, and we must, therefore, know how to read it and gain knowledge about it.

What is Eid-ul-Adha?

Eid-ul-Adha is one of the two main celebrations for Muslims. It is to remember Ibrahim (a.s.) and his willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail (a.s.) for Allah’s sake. At the last moment, Allah replaced his son with a ram.

Muslims sacrifice a variety of animals during Eid-ul-Adha. Camels, cows, goats, sheep, etc., are all common. Most people keep one portion for themselves, one for people they know, and one for the poor and needy, which is the sunnah method of dividing the sacrifice.

Eid-ul-Adha during the pandemic

Muslims have to see the situation in their country and community and then progress accordingly. In some countries with fewer cases, people are allowed to go out and move around normally. In these cases, people can easily head to the market and buy animals, performing Qurbani as usual. However, they must take precautions as advised by their leaders.

In many areas in the Muslim world, lockdowns are still in place, and there are restrictions upon moving around. One of the best options in such cases is online Qurbani, which is done by paying a charitable organization a fee that performs the sacrifice for you and distributes the meat to the poor and needy.

May Allah help us to extract maximum benefit from these occasions this year and make it easier for us next year. Ameen.
