The Outside In View Of Uncommon Bostonian by Yvonne Christian is a unique, biographical account about a black autistic woman growing up and adapting to modern America. It’s a book that has never been more topical or perfectly timed, and one which will have any reader spellbound from the first page until the last. It also showcases her abilities as news writer/commentator, blogger, and abstract artist.

To understand where her inspiration comes from, and what shapes her outlook on the world, we sat down with the author to hear more about the creative process and the experiences it aims to bring to life on paper.

“Thank you for contacting me, I truly appreciate it. First I want to say that this is a book that’s 100% real, authentic, and designed to give others an insight into my writing/artistic talents and my life before and after I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder. I’m a black woman dealing with the archaic structure of modern day America, and I’m also someone whose view of the world is different from so many others in ways we are all only just beginning to understand. In 2002 I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, and it’s a diagnosis that has caused me to reassess what my place in the world, and also my view of it, really means.”

It’s an interesting topic to write about, but what kind of read can we expect? Is it a memoir laden with memories and anecdotes?

I wanted to write a few books to build my resume as a writer and artist: A book with my artwork, a book of my blog posts, and a book of my personal essays. I didn’t know which one to start with so I decided to merge all three book ideas into one book. I saw it as a prelude to the memoir I want to write in the near future. To my surprise, everyone thinks I wrote a very unique memoir already.

“I want this book to be is an introduction to my life, a lens with which you can start to see the world as I see it, and also a way to open up dialogues about autistic people living and struggling in this tough world. What do I mean by that last one? Well, I do not exist as a person of color in isolation because I do experience the world in a way that is not predictable. All of these facets of my life come together to shape who I am, I simply wouldn’t be the woman you see sitting in front of you today.”

It’s certainly an interesting idea for a piece when you put it like that, so we finish things up by asking what comes next.

“More than anything I want to raise awareness of the social issues so many of us are facing. This book isn’t so much about me getting my story out there as it is about showing people that everyone has different views of the world, unique experiences, and creative skills that make the world a better place. Without variety and diversity, the world would be a much more dull place.”
