Previous Chair of the Transportation, Planning, Public Infrastructure, & Investment Committee, Zakim to Support Expansion of Boston-Founded Transportation and Mobility Company!

BOSTON – Today, Coaster Cycles announced that former Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim will be joining the company’s leadership team as a Public Affairs Advisor. After choosing not to seek re-election to a fourth two-year term, Zakim left the Boston City Council in January of this year. During his six years on the City Council, Zakim chaired the Committee on Housing & Community Development; the Committee on Civil Rights; and the Special Committee on Transportation, Infrastructure, Planning, & Investment.

“I am excited to continue working in the urban transportation and mobility space. We need greener, more efficient alternatives, especially for last-mile deliveries,” Zakim added. “Coaster has the potential to make a hugely positive impact on the environment and economy of cities across the country.”

As curbside congestion and traffic continues to worsen, cities are being very creative with solutions to ensure the safety, health, and overall livability.  The addition of bike lines, restriction of car access, and experimentation with vehicle capping and congestion pricing are but a few of the changes to the urban landscape that make Coaster a valuable solution for transportation, logistics, and mobility services. Private companies are also adding to the need for this solution, particularly in last-mile delivery which accounts for 53% of total delivery costs.

“It brings me great pride to add Josh’s excellent experience and perspective to the Coaster team, especially with our roots here in Boston and plans to expand in the region,” said Ben Morris, CEO of Coaster. “A market for a sustainable solution like Coaster is being created in cities as a result of regulation and public pressure and I think Josh will be an excellent resource in helping Coaster understand that market and build long-standing partnerships.”

During his tenure on the City Council, Zakim chaired the Committee with oversight of the Boston Transportation Department and the city’s relationship with the Massachusetts Port Authority, the MBTA, the Convention Center Authority, and related transportation agencies. In particular, the Committee had a mandate to oversee matters and coordinate action related to transportation network companies, and the city’s cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.

Coaster’s portfolio boasts a robust mix of public and private sector clients including Aramark, Nestle, Pepsi, University of Montana, Lime, and Uber. Coaster Cycles are offered in two size options and models can be configured to serve a variety of functions such as delivering food and packages, pouring coffee or beer, and servicing scooter and bike-share operations.  Coaster Cycles operate in the bike lane, can access areas cars cannot, do not require a driver’s license, and can be outfitted with a variety of integrated technology features like Coaster Performance and e-assist.
